GSSA and  the WCA camera ban

In October 2007 the Western Cape Archives (WCA) banned the use of cameras by individuals using the archives reading room, a practice which had previously been freely permitted.

Since then there has been much discussion about the ban, its purposes, its effects, its rights and wrongs.

On the 14th July 2008, the GSSA, in the persons of Johann Janse van Rensburg, the president, and Elmien Wood, the secretary, met a representative of the WCA and issued a statement.

For the information of members and others, the letters from the GSSA are made available here together with the documents issued by the WCA to which they refer.

1. Preliminary letter from the GSSA announcing the forthcoming meeting, dated 2nd July 2008 (Microsoft Word format)

2. Report from the GSSA on the meeting with the WCA and the agreement  made, dated 16th July 2008 (Microsoft Word format)

3. WCA Application Form for the Purchase of Reproductions of Archival Records, introduced January 2008 (Microsoft Word format)
