Tuesday 6 November 1849

The new line of road from Port Elizabeth to Graham's Town will shorten the distance by some twenty miles; and will thus make the distance of Graham's Town from the port of the Eastern Province only about as far again as the distance from Graham's Town to Port Frances. It is said to be a level nearly the whole way – and to run a great part of the way over limestone – so that it will not require much mending.
There is to be a post-office establishment at the Coega, where the letters for Somerset, Cradock &c will be received and sent direct to their destinations, instead of being forwarded as at present to Graham's Town. This will of course relieve the post-master at Graham's Town of a part of his present onerous duties.

Natal
(Witness)
Fortunately accidents and alarming occurrences seldom happen in our community. Men are not so jammed as to tread out the spark of life in each other; nor are the means of subsistence so scarce as to engender crime or to provoke to self-destruction. And yet it is our painful office to record the precipitate death of Mr. A. THOMSON, of this town; who was found this evening, in his house, to all appearances the victim of his own violence. He seems to have been shaving, and having finished, deliberately to have cut his throat. The supposition is – and it is not without foundation – that Mr. T had committed the rash act under the influence of remorse occasioned by intemperance. It is stated that severe losses may also have contributed to lead him to the sad determination.
This is the second melancholy event that has resulted from intemperance within the last few days; and the friends of mankind are naturally asking what the friends of Total Abstinence principles are doing. Here are calls to which they dare not be deaf!
