DEATHS.

BAXTER. – Mary Tunbridge, widow of the late William Moodie BAXTER and grandmother of Hazel and Clifford, passed away at the Provincial Hospital on 26th May, 1948, in her 84th year. Service in St Mary's Church to-morrow (Friday) morning at 11 o'clock, thence the funeral will proceed to the South End Cemetery.

SCHMIDT. – Oscar, accidently drowned on the 27th May, 1945. Remembered by Dad, Mom, Brothers and Sisters.

37,269 ASSISTED U.K. IMMIGRANTS.

London, Thursday, - Speaking in the House of Lords last night, Lord Addison, Lord Privy Seal, said that in the two years up to the end of last year 37,269 British assisted emigrants went to South Africa.

During the same period 75,439 went to Canada, 22,604 to Australia and 11,346 to New Zealand.

He said that the Government was doing everything it could to facilitate emigration to the Commonwealth, not withstanding the country's own shortage of manpower. –(Sapa-Reuter.)

BAIL ALLOWED IN MURDER CASE.

Cape Town, Thursday. – An application for bail was made to-day to Mr Justice HERBSTEIN in the Supreme Court by Leslie John KIRSTEN, aged 22 and Ralph Arthur KIRSTEN, aged 26, both Europeans, who are at present in goal awaiting trial on a charge of murder.

The brothers were committed for trial on April 2 on an allegation of murdering a European, Stephen John COWLEY. Their appearance followed a fight in a room at 25 Union Street on the night of March 19.

Ralph KIRSTEN was allowed bail of £25, and the hearing of Leslie KIRSTEN's application was postponed till to-morrow. – (Sapa)
