THE LATE MR. A. C. WILDE
The death of Mr. A. C. Wilde in Kensington last week removes a once well-known figure at the Cape Bar. The deceased gentleman was the sixth son of Sir John Wilde, Judge Advocate of New South Wales, and at one time Chief Justice of Cape Colony, and also a nephew of Thomas Wilde, Baron Truro, Lord Chancellor. Mr. Wilde began his career at the age of 20 as Attorney of the Supreme Court, Cape Town. He was afterwards Secretary to the Chief Justice, and successively Civil Commissioner and Resident Magistrate at Mossel Bay, Swellendam, and Port Elizabeth, at which latter place he remained over 25 years. None of his judgments were ever reversed. He took the lead in philanthropic movements throughout the Eastern Province, among which may be noted the introduction of Sunday closing, and the improvement in the condition of prisons. Mr. Wilde was instrumental in getting together the splendid volunteer corps known as Prince Alfred’s Guard, of which he was Colonel. This regiment won distinction in the Zulu War, and was recently heard of in connection with the offer to proceed to Pondoland. Mr. Wilde retired in 1889, and shortly afterwards came to England. His withdrawal from Colonial life was much regretted, as he was a great social favourite, and the regret felt at the news of his decease will be both deep and widespread, both in the Cape Colony and in Natal, where, particularly at Pietermaritzburg, not a few of his former official colleagues and private friends are now resident.
