REMARKABLE INSTINCT
A few days ago the people in charge of Mr. J.C. NAUDE’s farm, at Winterhoek, were surprised to see a mare, belonging to the farm, running about the homestead, neighing loudly and evincing great uneasiness. As the mare was known to have a young foal it occurred to the men that something might have befallen it, and they immediately left their work and proceeded to the place where the mare had been feeding the day before. As soon as the men left the homestead the mare followed; and its foal was discovered half eaten by a tiger. The trap was laid for the animal, baited with the remains of the foal, and the next evening the tiger was captured. The foal was the progeny of a fine blood horse and of considerable value.

Notice is hereby given to John ADONIS, a Kaffir, under contract to me for the term of one year, bearing date the 29th March 1854, that unless he comes within 21 days from this date, and releases his goats from me, they will be sold for his account to pay expenses of herding and advertising the same, also to liquidate his account for ten goats, either stolen or lost on the 28th day of March last. The said Kaffir deserted my service at Middleburg, in the month of June last, taking with him a sambok, value 10s.

The following is a copy of an address presented by the inhabitants of Somerset to the Hon. John Watts EBDEN Esq, Acting Puisne Judge of the Honorable the Supreme Court of the Colony of the Cape of Good Hope:
Sir, It is with feelings of very severe gratification we the undersigned inhabitants of Somerset congratulate you on your appointment as a Judge of the Supreme Court, and we most confidently look forward to your confirmation. We have witnessed your able and tried abilities for many years, as the leading Barrister of Circuit, and we only trust you may long be spared to serve your country in the same able and courteous manner which has hitherto marked your career. Wishing you every success and prosperity, we beg to subscribe ourselves.

DRAWING CLASS
Mr. W.H. RABONE begs to inform the inhabitants of Graaff Reinet that he proposes to form classes for instruction in Drawing from Nature, in pencil and chalk, as taught in the modern Schools of Design
A class for a limited number of young gentlemen will meet for study one evening in each week, a separate evening being devoted to a ladies’ class. The course will commence early in January.

Died at Graaff Reinet on Sunday afternoon, the 24th inst, after a lingering illness of five months, Honoratus Robart Maynier VAN RYNEVELD, formerly of the Cape Corps, second son of the late W.C. VAN RYNEVELD Esq, aged 39 years and six months, leaving a widow and five children to deplore his untimely loss.
The relatives of the deceased avail themselves of this opportunity to return their most heartfelt thanks to his numerous friends, who so kindly assisted him during his protracted and painful illness.
