This Bible was always on a shelf in the farmhouse. During the Boer war when English soldiers started to burn the farms down and they getting closer to Johannes's farm, he asked his sons to bury everything possible in a wood near the farmhouse. Only the bible and the shelf were left inside the house. One day the soldiers arrived on the farm and put the family on a ox-wagon to the concentration camp near Standerton Mpumalanga. Susanna put the Bible on the wagon but the English soldier in charge threw it off the wagon and it was put back inside the house on the shelf and then the house was set on fire.
After the war when the family arrived back on the farm, one of the farm workers handed back the Bible and shelf to my great grand father and told him that everything in the house burned but only the shelf and Bible survived the fire.
My great grandfather was Johannes Petrus Lafras Du Plessis * Marikana dist Rustenburg North West, *03.01.1856 and died 22.03.1922 on his farm Klipkraal near Trichardt Mpumalanga. Johannes married his first wife Petronella Wilhelmina Jacobson *21.05.1857 and died 17.05.1875 with the birth of their first child.
My grandfatherwas also Johannes Petrus Lafras Du Plessis *03.03.1889 died 10.06.1982 Bethal Mpumalanga. His father Johannes above was sent by Paul Kruger to the Eastern Transvaal to start educate the children on the farms. Johannes build a school on his farm for two teachers and two of the letters above were written by John Oosthuizen, from the school commission to give his condolences to Johannes's wife. Today only the foundation of the school can be seen in the veld and between 1933 and 1935 the school closed and was moved to Vaalkop near Trichardt Mpumalanga.
