Symbolic conclusion. Dragons on the side, dark storm clouds, raging seas and high mountains were some of the dangers the Trekkers had to face. Everything is balanced on the open book of the Bible, and the lowly wagon wheel keeps it together. On the right is a guardian angel. The buildings in the background are the Houses of Parliament in Cape Town.
Date: 13. November 2019

Gathered around the Bible. Nobody was allowed to stay away from the ritual of the family listening to the patriarch reading from the Bible. This was the time when Psalm 119 was read in full on a single evening. Afterwards children would be asked to repeat what they have heard.
Date: 13. November 2019

Funeral in the wilderness. A plain wooden coffin is lowered into the red earth. One can see the sadness in the posture of the little boy on the right. One can almost feel the need to still be on the lookout for an attack, while shouldering the sadness of death.
Date: 13. November 2019

Thaba Nchu. The word "thaba" means mountain, and "nchu" is black. Notice the mountain in the background - that is the Black Mountain this area was called after by the native Barolong. The name was probably given because of dark storm clouds gathering over the mountain before one of the frequent thunder storms.
Date: 13. November 2019

Vegkop : 16 Okt 1936 naby Heilbron in die Vrystaat

Battle of Vegkop. This battle scene shows clearly how everybody had to get involved to ensure the safety of the group. Women and older girls had to stand behind the men and load the guns as they were used. They also had to melt lead and make bullets. Younger children had to help take care of the wounded. Boys were taught to shoot from a young age and had to do their part in defending they family group.
Date: 13. November 2019

Crossing the wide Orange River. Plans had to be made to get the wagons, livestock and people across the wide Orange River/ Not surprisingly, it was named the "Great River" by the Trekkers. The name was changed to "Orange river" because of the colour of the water, picking up the red mud and sand along its banks.
Date: 13. November 2019
