Death Notice (Cape Archives) of brother John says he was born in Essex, the son of Samuel and Elizabeth VICE

Samuel VICE married Martha BALLS, widow, on 15 November 1759 in St.Leonard's, Southminster, Essex.

Matha's first husband was Francis BALLS, who was buried on 28 September 1758 (Family Search). Her maiden name was ROBINS and she married Francis in St.Leonard, Southminster on 30 September 1744. She and Francis had five children, at least one of whom died in infancy. Samuel VICE, father of the 1820 settlers, was the only child of Martha's second marriage.

 

Samuel son of Samuel and Martha VICE baptised March 22 1761 in St.Leonard's, Southminster, Essex.

 

Samuel VICE of Southminster married Elizabeth DELAHAY by banns on 9 December 1783 in St.Michael, Woodham Walter, Essex.

James DELAHAY and Mary JAY were married 1 October 1758 in St.Michael, Woodham Walter, Essex.

Samuel Robinson, son of Samuel and Elizabeth VICE, was baptised 26 December 1786 in St.Leonard's, Southminster, Essex

John, son of Samuel and Elizabeth VICE, was baptised March 10th 1788 in St.Leonard's, Southminster, Essex (born February 15th)

William, son of Samuel and Elizabeth VICE, was baptised December 29th 1790 in St.Leonard's, Southminster, Essex (born October 31st - presumed to have died before 1800, when another William was baptised)

Martha, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth VICE, was baptised May 13th 1792 in St.Leonard's, Southminster, Essex (born April 20th 1792 and buried 3 March 1795 )

James, son of Samuel and Elizabeth VICE, was baptised October 20th 1793 in St.Leonard's, Southminster, Essex (born October 8th)

Ann, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth VICE, was baptised June 23rd 1797 in St.Leonard's, Southminster, Essex (born May 9th)

Hannah, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth VICE, was baptised March 24th 1799 in St.Leonard's, Southminster, Essex (born Marh 13th)

William, son of Samuel and Elizabeth VICE, was baptised September 17th 1800 in St.Leonard's, Southminster, Essex (born August 6th)

Joseph, son of Samuel and Elizabeth VICE, was baptised July 10th 1803 in St.Leonard's, Southminster, Essex (born July 2nd)

Aaron, son of Samuel and Elizabeth VICE, was baptised 26 January 1806 in St.Leonard's, Southminster, Essex (born January 23rd)

James VICE married Sophia HOWARD (no marital status given) on 26 March 1815 in St.Martin in the Fields.

Both signed their names.

James, son of James and Sophia VICE, East Lane, Walworth, butcher, baptised 4 February 1816 in St.Mary, Newington (born 14 January 1816)

Elizabeth, daughter of James and Sophia VICE, New Cut, butcher, baptised 22 March 1818 in Christ Church, Southwark

 

The 8 year old son, John VICE, listed in The Settler Handbook, may well have been from a previous marriage. No marital status is given on the marriage of James VICE to Sophia HOWARD.
