The 1820 Settler Correspondence
as preserved in the National Archives, Kew
 and edited by Sue Mackay

pre 1820 Settler Correspondence before emigration

ALL the 1819 correspondence from CO48/41 through CO48/46 has been transcribed whether or not the writers emigrated to the Cape. Those written by people who did become settlers, as listed in "The Settler Handbook" by M.D. Nash (Chameleon Press 1987), are labelled 1820 Settler and the names of actual settlers in the text appear in red.

To the Secretary of State for the Home Department

A number of famileys in this Neighbourhood wishing to avail themselves of the opportunity of emigrating to His Majesty's Colony of the Cape of Good Hope are desirous of such information as will enable them to know whether it will be in their favour to undertake the important voyage. I mean particularly what sum of money will be required per head as a deposit – as that I think did not apear in the circular published by His Majesty's Government. I am awair this is addressed to the wrong office but not knowing how to direct to the other I beg you will put it in such a chanil as will satisfye the aplication(?)

I am my Lord your Lordship's most obedient humble servant
