Mansfield, the 16th century Butter Cross in Westgate. Next to the cross is a water pump erected recently to commemorate the start of Methodism in the town in 1788, when John Adams, a Methodist preacher from Nottingham, conducted worship by the water pump in the Old Market Place. Later a Methodist Chapel was established in Bridge Street, where two sons of Thomas and Sarah HARTLEY were baptised. Francis ALLISON, Thomas BROOKS and Samuel JACKSON also lived in Mansfield and would have attended the markets held here.
