Margate, harbour. The original Margate pier was destroyed in a storm in January 1808. A stone pier was in use by 1815, when Napoleon was defeated at Waterloo. Press gangs operated in the area during the Napoleonic Wars. John MATHAM and Sarah MAXTED came from Margate.
