Dover, St.James the Apostle and White Horse Inn

Dover, St.James the Apostle and White Horse Inn

Ruins of St.James the Apostle in James Street, Dover and the ancient White Horse Inn. This was the original church, a replacement building having been erected in 1860 on Maison Dieu Road a short distance away. Both churches were severely damaged during the Second World War. The church on Maison Dieu Road was demolished in 1953. The tower of the old church, already badly damaged, collapsed on 2 May 1951; the building was then made safe and preserved as a "tidy ruin". Richard BOWLES and Elizabeth AMOS were married in St.James the Apostle, as were Alexander CUMMINS and Elizabeth BUSHELL and James REED and Sarah Maria SLOMAN.
