The Greendale Oak Inn in Norton Cuckney, allegedly so named after a great oak tree through which a hole was cut to allow the first Duke of Portland (1682-1726) to drive through with a coach and horses in order to win a bet. Thomas HARTLEY married his first wife Hannah HOPKINS in Norton Cuckney and lived in the village until about 1802. The village is very close to Clumber Park, after which the Nottingham Party settlement of Clumber was named.
