Marriage Licence of Parents:
Know all Men by these Presents that We, John WEDDERBURN of the parish of Dalton in Furness, Gardener, and Christopher HODGSON of Whittington, Taylor, both in the County Palatine of Lancaster are held and firmly bound unto the Right Reverend Father in God, Edmond, by Divine Permission, Lord Bishop of Chester, in two hundred pounds of good and lawful money of Great Britain, to be paid to the said Right Reverend Father, or to his certain Attorney, Executors, Administrators or Assigns; to which payment well and truly to be made, We oblige Ourselves, and each of Us, by himself for the whole, Our and each of Ours Heirs, Executors and Administrators firmly by these Presents, Sealed with our Seals, dated the twenty sixth day of April in the year of our Lord 1756
The Condition of this Obligation is such that if there shall not hereafter appear any lawful Let or Impediment by reason of any Pre-Contract, Consanguinity, Affinity, or any other just Cause whatsoever, but that the above bound on John WEDDERBURN and Ann HODGSON of Whittington aforesaid, spinster. may Lawfully Marry together, and that there is not any Suit depending before any Judge Ecclesiastical or Civil, for or concerning any such Pre-Contract; and that the Consent of the Parents, or others the Governors of the said Parties, be thereunto first had and obtained, and that they cause their said Marriage to be openly Solemnised in the Face of the Parish Church of Whittington between the Hours of Eight and Twelve in the Forenoonsave and do and shall save harmless and keep indemnified the above-named Lord Bishop, his Comissary, his Surrogates, and all other his Officers, and Successors in Office, for and concerning the Premises, then this Obligation to be void, or else in Force.

This twenty sixth day of April in the Year of our Lord 1756 the within named John WEDDERBURN aged Twenty Nine years and upwards, appeared personally and alledged that he intended to marry with Ann HODGSON within named, aged Twenty four years, and that he knoweth of no lawful Let or Impediment, by reason of any Pre-contract, Consanguinity, Affinity, or any other lawful Cause whatsoever, to hinder the said intended Marriage of the truth of which he made oath, also that the usual place of abode of the said John WEDDERBURN for the space of four weeks immediately preceding the Date hereof hath been in the Parish of Dalton in Furness and also that the usual place of abode of the said Ann HODGSON for the like space of time hath been in the said village of Whittington.

At the residence of her son, Graham’s Town, Cape of Good Hope, on the 2nd Nov., Ann, relict of the late C. WEDDERBURN, Born QUAIL, a native of Bootle, Cumberland, in the 86th year of her age. The deceased was one of the British Settlers of 1820. Her end was peace.
