Obituary
Death of Ex-Senator “Harry” VAN HEERDEN
The death was announced to-day of Mr. Hercules (Harry) VAN HEERDEN, father of Mr. G.C. VAN HEERDEN, M.P., at Tarkastad early this morning.  Mr. Harry VAN HEERDEN was one of the prominent men in South Africa in his active days and even after he retired to his Tarkastad home he was liked and respected for those qualities which had stood him in such good stead in the earlier days.  Mr. VAN HEERDEN achieved high positions in the service of the state and was an honoured figure in many of the most responsible offices that the country can offer to his servants.  He began his political career as M.L. A. for Cradock and ended by achieving the distinguished title of Senator the Honourable Hercules VAN HEERDEN, President of the Senate of the Union of South Africa.  He was during his parliamentary career, appointed Minister of Agriculture, an office that brought him the highest renown.  He was exceedingly popular both in the House of Assembly and in the Senate as a result of his amiable ways and moderate views.  He was a pillar of the South African Party, an example of high standing being the fact that he was selected by Mr. MERRIMAN as one of the delegates to the National Convention.  He was one of the few living survivors of that historic body of men.  Mr. VAN HEERDEN was 71 years old.  His home was Schaapkraal, Tarkastad, a well-known Border farm.  The funeral took place at Tarkastad to-day.

Unusual Circumstances of a Death
The death occurred under unusual circumstances recently of Mrs. F.H. HEPWORTH, of Harrismith, at the age of 77.  Mrs. HEPWORTH and her husband were sitting carrying on a conversation when her head was seen suddenly to fall to one side.  Thinking that his wife was asleep Mr. HEPWORTH placed a pillow behind her head and later put her to bed.  On Monday morning he again dressed his wife and put her back into her chair.  Noting however that she still appeared to be asleep he sent for a doctor, who declared that Mrs. HEPWORTH had been dead for about 24 hours.

A Motoring Fatality
Several accidents occurred on the East London road on Monday night (states the Cape Mercury).  Mr. Fred BURGER had his car seriously damaged in a collision near Bell Rock when returning from East London.  A company of local natives on the way from Stutterheim came to grief the other side of Amabele.  Full details are not available, but we gather that the car in which, there were five passengers, struck a sneezewood pole which had former part of a gate removed some time ago.  The impact was so severe that the driver, Paul MAKAMBI, was killed on the spot, and all the other occupants of the car were injured, through apparently not very seriously.

Fell Dead on the Veld.
A European woman, Mrs. Ignatius ENGELBRECHT, residing on a farm in the Zuurberg, Somerset East district, was found dead in the veld recently (states the Cradock paper).  A post mortem examination by the District Surgeon reveals that the death was due to heart failure.  The deceased, who is 67 years of age, was missed by her husband and son the previous evening and as it was surmised that she had walked to the house of another son who resided about 500 yards away, a search was made, but it was only after daylight that the body was found.  Investigations showed that deceased fell in the footpath on which she was walking, but as there is a steep incline the body rolled some distance away and that was why it was not found in the dark.
