DIED at Port Elizabeth on the 10th November, John JENNINGS Esq, Attorney at Law.

DIED from drowning in the Zwartkops River, Mr. William PRETYMAN of Port Elizabeth.

MOURNFUL ACCIDENT
On Saturday last while a party of gentlemen from Port Elizabeth were enjoying themselves in having a little boating on the Zwartkops, one of the most distressing accidents which we have ever had to chronicle took place. In tacking through a long reach of the river against a head wind some water must have been shipped, and just as the last tack was being made a sudden squall came down upon the boat, under which she took on more water and sank beneath her unsuspecting crew. All made for the banks of the river, and all reached, with the exception of Mr. PRETYMAN, one of the party who could not swim. He sank immediately and was no more – the last that was seen of him being his hand thrust above the water for a moment. Every search was made for his body the same day and also yesterday, but no account of its having been found has yet reached us while we write.
This accident has thrown a gloom over our community. Mr. PRETYMAN was a young man, in the very prime of life, and has for many years been so identified with our society that his sudden removal could not but excite the most mournful feelings. What an affecting comment on the text “that in the midst of life we are in death”. Mr. PRETMAN leaves a widow and one child who are at present in England to deplore their loss.
