Death at the Military Guard-room
A private of the 2nd-11th Regiment, named MOONEY, died early this morning in the guard-room of the Drosdy, where he was in confinement for an act of insubordination. Mr. WOLFE and Dr. ATHERSTONE were to make an investigation this afternoon into the cause of death. We have not heard the result.

A Fine Dam in Queenstown
On the farm “Phalgrave”, the property of R. WRIGHT, of this town, a very creditable dam is in course of construction, and which speaks much for the enterprise of that gentleman. It is situated immediately above the house occupied by Mr. A. FINCHAM, and made between two ironstone koppies, between which a large sluit, 20 feet deep and 12 feet wide, has been washed out. The retaining walls run across this, and 14 feet above the ground line, are 21 feet thick in the narrowest part, and it is a well consolidated structure. During the late floods, the water passed over the dam some feet above the present level, and little or no effect was produced on the work. The length of the wall is 180 feet from end to end. Some of the stones are of immense size and weight. – Representative.

DEATH OF COMMANDANT KOLBE
This sad event occurred at the farm Leeuwberg, on the night of Friday the 3rd April. John Gerson Eliezer KOLBE had departed this life after a severe illness of 2 or 3 weeks, in the prime of life, and in the midst of his usefulness, leaving a widow and 12 children to lament their loss. He returned from commando some four weeks ago, suffering illness, which turned out to be typhus, or typhoid fever, shortly afterwards took to his bed, and never rallied, thus adding another to the long list of victims of our miserable war. What makes it more to be lamented is, that it is now very generally admitted that by good management after April 1866 the present, or rather recent war might have been avoided, and many valuable lives and much suffering and consequent unnecessary expenditure of money spared. Mr. KOLBE was born on the 7th July 1822 and married on the 3rd April 1843 to Anna Jacoba VAN DER MERWE and, strange coincidence, died on the anniversary of his wedding day. He had not completed his 46th year. His parents came out with the settlers of 1820; his father was of German extraction, if not birth, but resided and married in London. His mother – a thorough-going and fine old English lady – it will be remembered died in Burghersdorp about three months since. Mr. KOLBE’s father soon after his arrival in the colony – we do not know the exact period – became a Missionary to the Griquas at Philippolis, and most of his family, we believe, grew up there. The subject of this obituary notice removed to this district some 18 years since, and settled on the farm where he died and now lies on Kaalspruit, in this district. Of four daughters he has left behind him one daughter alone is married, the youngest being but an infant. Two of the sons, who have been serving with their father in the field, have proved themselves to be amongst the bravest of our burghers. Mr. KOLBE at the time of his lamented decease was Commandant of the district, a Justice of the Peace, a director of the Bloemfontein Bank, and deacon of the Dutch Reformed Church. For about 12 years after the abandonment, he steadily declined having anything to do with public affairs, he having been one of those who protested against the withdrawal of the British Government, and who applied to Sir George CLERK for compensation for his land, in order that he might leave with the troops and settle in the Cape Colony. Failing in obtaining compensation, he, like many more, had to cast his lot with the Free State, but he did not hold any office under the Government till the end of 1865, when he became Acting Commandant. We have often heard him declare that he would not even have left the quiet retirement of his farm had he not seen that his services were so urgently and absolutely required. Mr. KOLBE, from that time, proved one of the bravest and most active of our commandants. Previously to the capture of the Tiemie he felt very unwell, his last enemy having already laid hold upon him, but he was not thereby to be deterred from doing his duty and taking his share of the toil and danger on that occasion. We would now call attention to one most striking and pleasing fact connected with the last days of this brave and true patriot. On his death-bed, and while he still retained his full senses, he declared to the Doctor, to Mr. SALZMANN, and to others that were at his bed-side, that this State had taken too much land from the Basutos, and that he had felt so all along, and had declared it as his opinion in the Volksraad, in May 1867, at the time of the making of the “corn peace”; and now, on the bed from which he never expected to rise again, he wished by message to warn the Raad, and to beg of them to rescind their resolution, annul their protest, and to treat with the Governor for an equitable settlement of the boundary line. Mr. KOLBE was interred on Monday last; Mr. P. GROBLER, Elder of the Church, conducted the religious services in the absence of the minister, and suitable addresses being delivered by His Honor the President, Mr. VAN SOELEN, Landdrost of Bloemfontein, and Mr. SALZMANN, a neighbour and intimate friend. About 140 persons had assembled and stood around the grave to show this last mark of respect to the memory of the deceased.

Accident at Trumpetter’s Drift
On Monday last a wagon and span of sixteen oxen, in attempting to cross the Fish River at Trumpetter’s Drift, were washed down and six of the oxen were drowned. Messrs. COCKCROFT and PHILLIPS, who were in the wagon at the time, had a narrow escape. The oxen and wagon were floated a mile and a half down the river, before they were stopped by coming into contact with a snag. Young CURRAN went into the river and cut the straps of ten oxen, which were saved. These were so weak that they could scarcely swim to the bank. CURRAN and a Kafir in the employ of Mr. MONTGOMERY swam by the sides of some of them and held their heads up. The contents of the wagon were washed out and lost.

Accident
On Thursday last Mr. Charles HOLLIDAY Jun met with a severe accident in the dislocation of his ankle-joint, through jumping out of a cart, the horses of which had bolted. The traces, it seems, had become disarranged, and the cart ran on to the horses’ heels, which caused them to kick and take fright, and become unmanageable, and just as they had turned into the opening near the Zetland lodge, Mr. HOLLIDAY threw himself out, but his foot unfortunately catching in the reins, he fell off his balance, and hurt his ankle. – F.B. Deceased arrived in this Colony with the Settlers of 1820, and was for 37 years a devoted and most zealous Minister of Christ’s Gospel.

DIED at Orange Grove, near Ladysmith, Natal, after a painful illness of only four days, Sarah Ann, the beloved wife of Mr. James JAMES, and daughter of the late Mr. James WEEKS, of Grahamstown, aged 37 years and 7 months, who departed this life on Wednesday the 22nd April 1868, leaving a disconsolate husband, six children (the youngest only four days old) and a large number of relatives and friends to mourn their irreparable loss. She was an affectionate wife, a loving mother, and a kind friend to all who knew her. How truthful: “That in the midst of life we are in death”.

DIED at Somerset East, May 27 1868, of consumption, John Milton, son of Mr. Benjamin and Eliza SARGEANT, aged 18 years, 7 months and 22 days. The deceased was the only surviving child of seven. He bore his lingering sufferings with Christian resignation to the will of God, and “his end was peace”.

MURDER
Intelligence was received at Fort Beaufort on Thursday night of a shocking murder having been perpetrated at Tambookie Fontein, in the Winterberg, on the previous evening. As far as we have yet been able to ascertain, a quarrel arose between two brothers-in-law, named KEYER and ENGELBRECHT, about the trespassing of some cattle, which resulted in the latter stabbing KEYER to the heart with a knife. Death resulted immediately. ENGELBRECHT immediately left the place, and it is supposed has made to the Free State. The police arrived at the scene of the murder about midday on Thursday, but ENGELBRECHT was nowhere to be found. Dr. DE SMIDT, district surgeon, left early yesterday morning for the scene to hold a post mortem examination. The Resident Magistrate, L.H. MEURANT Esq, also left shortly after to enquire judicially into the facts of the case. – Advocate.
