Died, - At Frere Hospital, East London, on the 29th of December 1897, Charlotte Annie, aged 35 years, the beloved wife of Mr. J. HOSKINS, of Queenstown, leaving a disconsolate husband and five children to mourn their irreparable lose.

On Wednesday afternoon a very pretty wedding took place at the Wesley Church, the contracting parties being Mr William J COOPER (Queenstown's champion cylclist) and Miss Janet Maud, eldest daughter of Mr H UNDERWOOD.  The bride was given away by her father, and the ceremony was performed by the Rev P Tearle. The church was crowded.  After the nuptial knot had been tied the happy couple drove to the residence of the bride's father, where cake and wine were handed round to the large gathering of friends who had assembled.

Wedding bells.
A very pretty wedding took place at Lady Frere on the 5th instant between Caroline Maud LARTER, second daughter of S R LARTER, Esq. and George Richard ROUS, postmaster, Laingsburg, formerly of Lady Frere.  The bride was very prettily attired in cream corded silk, with wreath and veil.  The bridesmaids were Miss LARTER, Miss Amy LARTER, and Miss Lillian ROUS (of Rosebank).  The flower girls were Miss Olive LARTER, Miss Annie ROUS, and Miss Merl LARTER. ....... The bridesgroom was attended by his brother, Mr William ROUS.  The ceremony was conducted by the Rev D DODD.

The Late Mr. J.S.P. SOWDEN.  We have just heard with great regret of the death of Mr. J.S.P. SOWDEN, the sad event taking place at Bloemfontein on Wednesday evening. Mr. SOWDEN came to this Colony for the benefit of his health, and with Mr
MITCHELL and Mr STODDART, established the well known firm, of SOWDEN, MITCHELL, and STODDART, carrying on business for many years in Queenstown, Bloemfontein, Aliwal, and other places along the border and in the Free State.  Mr SOWDEN was
the managing partner at Bloemfontein, and, his health being thoroughly restored, returned to direct the old country.  His health, however, giving way slightly, he came back to Bloemfontein, where he was for many years one of the leading
citizens, occupying the position of Mayor at the time of his death.  He was an active member of the Wesley Church, invariably appointed a lay delegate to Conference, and not only with the time and ability, but in other directions was a lavish supporter of the church of his choice.  Mr SOWDEN was twice married, and leaves a wido and family to mourn their irreparable loss.

The late Mr. William BARRABLE of Molteno.
The sad intelligence reached Queenstown on Monday of the death of  Mr. William BARRABLe, for may years a a resident of the township of Molteno. BARRABLE had been suffering from lassitude and debility for some time, gradually sinking until he passed quietly away in the bosom of his family on Sunday  evening , the 30th January, 1898, and within a week of reaching his sixty-sixth birth day.  He was born in Plymounth, England on the 4th February, 1832, and came to the Colony with his parents in May, 1847....

A Sad Death
We record with great regret the death which took place at the Frontier Hospital on Wednesday morning from Typhoid fever, of Mr John DUNCAN, son of Mr J DUNCAN, Queenstown.  The deceased was taken ill a fortnight ago, and removed to the hospital, where all that skilled care and attention could do for him was done, but unfortunately without avail.  He was twenty years of age, was emplyed at the Central Supply Stores, was a prominet mem ber of the Cross Football Club and was  a general favourite.  The funeral took place yesterday (Thursday) afternoon.
The greatest sympathy is felt for Mr DUNCAN, who in the past three months has lost twe members of his family from typoid fever.

Died,- At Berlin, on the 19th February, 1898 Sarah Ann, the beloved wife of Nathaniel BROWN of Berlin, district King William's Town, aged 82 years, 9 months and 6 days.  She leaves an aged husband, 10 children and nearly 100 grand and
great grandchildren, together with a numerous circle of relatives to mourn her loss.  Born in England, 13th May, 1815, she came to this country with the settlers in 1820:  married 23rd December, 1833, the husband who now mourns her loss.
She lived a true Christian and died a happy glorous death firm on the "Rock of Ages".

A later article names Mr SJ BROWN of Lily Vale, as one of her sons.

Death of Mr Chas EVANS, - The Pretoria papers announce the death of Mr Chas EVANS on Monday last.  Mr EVANS was a resident of Queenstown shortly after it was laid out, and took an active part in all matters for the welfare of the town,  He married Miss ZEILER, of this district, and had a large family.  The funeral at Pretoria was largely attended by leading citizens, and the burial services were conducted by the Rev. WEAVIND and Rev MORRIS of the Wesleyan Church.

Death of Mr. James STUART.  Mr Jomes STUART died at the residence of his son, Mr Robert STUART, at Cala on the morning of the 22nd February, at the rife old age of 74 years and 6 months. Mr STUART, who was born at Glenlivevet, Banffshire, Scotland, after qualifying ofr his trade in his native village and at Aberdeen, came to the Colony accompanied by his wife and children in 1860 and settled down in Queenstown....

The Late Mr. H.E. BECKER - The "Daily Dispatch" announces the death of Mr H.E. BECKER of East London.  He was only 43 years of age, but during that period he had a varied experience.  He settled at East London, then went to Kimberley, Aliwal North, and for some time was a resident in Queenstown, carrying on business in connection with Mr F B BROWN.  He ultimately returned to East London, where he has been in business for some years...

Relating article, same date:
Mr DASHWOOD, who was born in London, came to this Colony about 1860.  He first went to Grahamstown where he lived for some years, and afterwards removed to Queenstown, where he resided for twenty years.

The Late Mr W. ADAMS. - We regret to announce the demise of Mr Webster ADAMS, which took place on Thursday morning at the Frontier Hospital, from Typhoid fever.  The deceased, who only went to the Hospital on the previous Sunday, was
making progress towards recovery, but had a relapse, which in his weakened state he was not able to fight against.  Mr ADAMS, who was 33 years of age, was in the employ of Messrs Wainwright & Co. of this town, and was the son of Dr. ADAMS,
Ipswich, Suffolk, to whom the sad news will come as a shock. The funeral took place at the Anglican Cemetery on Friday afternoon, the Rev C.W. WALLACE officiating.

Almost a Centenarian
Perhaps most of our readers (says the Fort Beaufort "Advocate") - especially our English readers - are unaware that there is living in this district a somewhat remarkable old lady, Mrs SW MALAN, mother-in-law of Mr JH VAN DE VYVER, sen., of Smit's Kraal.  On the 18th of March last she celebrated her 96th birthday, and was able on that occation to give a remarkably vivid account of her life, as also a graphic discription of her honeymoon at the age of 19.  As far as can be ascertained at present, the number of her descendants is four hundred and twenty, of whom about forty are dead.  She is a great-great-great-grandmother.  Her eldest daughter Mrs Marx, is 75 years of age, and has a list of descendants one hundread an fifty-nine.  The latter lady married at the age of 15, and when only 18 was the proud mother of six rosy children.

Death of Mrs GRIFFITH
This (Wednesday) morning, says the East London "Daily Dispatch," there passed away one whose loss will not only be deeply mourned by her own husband and family, but by hosts of dear and intimate friends.  Mrs GRIFFITH, wife of Colonel GRIFFITH, C.M.G., has been resident in our midst for many years....
Mrs GRIFFITH was a daughter of Mr GILFILLAN of Cradock, and for may years resided in Queenstown while here husband was Civil Commisioner and Resident Magistrate of Queenstown....

Sad Death. - We record with very much regret the death of Mr Percy William BOWLER, aged twenty-five years, who was engaged in the T.P.O.  Mr BOWLER, was a native of Haverfordwest, came to the Colony some fifteen months ago, and had previously been in South  America as a clerk in the employ of a cable company. He had been indisposed some little time, and on Good Friday was removed from his boarding house to the hospital,  suffering from typhoid fever.  Every care and skilled attention were bestowed upon him, but he passed away at eight o'clock on Monday night....

The late Mr. M. MILEY - We have to record the death of Mr Michael MILEY, Cycle Depot, who yesterday (Monday) week was removed to the Hospital suffering from typhoid fever, and who died there on Friday morning.... The deceased who leaves a wife and three children, insured his life, we understand, for 500pounds, having only paid the first premium the other day.
 
Death of Mr J. BREETZKE. - We have to record the death, at the early age of twenty-four years, of Mr John Molteno BREETZKE, second son of Mr C BREETZKE.  The deceased, who had been engaged in the railway service for the past eight years, was taken to the hospital on the 16th inst. suffering from typhoid fever, and died in the institution on the 20th.
He leaves a widow and one child, having lost lately a little boy through a very sad accident....

The late Mr. Robert DUNCOMBE - We regret to have to regret the sudden death of Mr Robert DUNCOMBE, of Bongolo Nek, who was found dead in bed on Monday morning.  The deceased, who was fifty-seven years of age, leaves a widow and several children.  Mr DUNCOMBE had been in the country for many years....

Death of Mr J HALL. - We regret to have to record the death, from fever of Mr John HALL.  Mr HALL was educated in the Wesleyan Grammar School, and afterwards was in the employ of Messrs Morum Bros.  He went to Bulawayo with a party of Queenstown young men.  Their prospecting operations promised well, and all looked forward with hope to the future, but one of their number has passed away.
 
Sad Suicide at Queenstown.
The inquest.
The inhabitants of Queenstown were startled on Friday morning at hearing of the tragic death of Mr Stedman Thrubsole CRISPE, who was unmarried, and was about thirty-six years of age.  The deceased, who had been in the Colony some five years, was a son of Mr Shepheard Stedman CRISPE, a brewer in a large way of business at Barking, Essex, and who died last September.  For the past three years or mor Mr ST CRISPE had been in the service of Mr F Seymour DENT. and a more lenient of kindly-disposed employer it would be impossible to find.  It is only too probable that the deceased, who is spoken of by Mr DENT as a splendid workman, was upset at fearing he had been left out of his father's will - the other children benefiting to the exten of 10,000 pounds each, and this caused him to give way to drink, culminating in a self-infilcted wound on Thursday night which ended in his death.....

On Wednesday morning a quiet and pretty little wedding was celebrated at the Presbyterian Church, Queenstown, the contracting parties being Miss EJ JAMIESON, second daughter of Mrs T JAMIESON, Coldstream, Queenstown, and Mr JT DUNCAN, son of Mr Jas DUNCAN, Queenstown.  The Rev WJ DOWER tied the nuptial knot.  Miss Ethel JAMIESON, sister of the bride, was bridesmaid, and Mr Donald DUNCAN, brother of the bridegroom was best man....
