EMIGRANTS : ROEDELOFF
Uitenhage, July 28th 1837
On Saturday last Mr. B. ROEDELOFF arrived in Town on a visit to his relatives from the Travelling Farmers, whom he left at the Kat River, which falls into the Vaal, all well.
Mr. ROEDELOFF, though a Layman, preached at the Union Chapel on Sunday evening, taking his text from 7th Chapter St.Matthew 21st, 22nd and 23rd verses.
We have received a good deal of information from this gentleman. He states they have Divine Service three times every Sunday; they have also established Courts of Justice, and have founded their laws chiefly on VAN DER LINDEN. Mr. RETIEF, the head, is Chief Justice; in which Court there are 12 members. Mr. MARITZ is president of the inferior Court. They have also established an Insolvent Chamber – several sentences of Debt have already been executed. Their proceedings are very peremptory, but no sentence of death can be executed, unless fiated by RETIEF.
The Emigrants are divided into six parts, each having a leader. In the first attack of Matsilikatze they lost 47,000 Sheep, besides a number of Cattle, and 700 draught oxen, which latter were re-captured the following day; they also had seven men killed and two wounded.
The Chief Morokko, in whose country the Travellers now are, is very friendly. His people bring in to market abundant supplies of Pumpkins, Indian and Caffer Corn, and Potatoes of the Kidney sort.
Mr. ROEDELOFF has brought with him two rings, from Mrs. SMITH, the Missionary’s wife, which he states have been manufactured from the gold ore where they are encamped. We have seen these articles, but according to our imperfect judgement in metals, they appear to be formed from Brass Wire.
The country is described as beautiful beyond description; Mr. ROEDELOFF states that the Travellers will proceed nine days further on the N.W. of Delagoa Bay, where they are to erect their capital.
