CAPE TOWN
On Monday last Mr. and Mrs. ROUX were committed to prison a charge of murder by the Resident Magistrate. The charge is that ROUX and his wife, having rubbed a mixture of tar or pitch and grease on the body of a man in their service, while he was asleep or in a state of intoxication, set fire to it, by which the man was so scorched that he died. The man was brought to the Hospital. The immediate cause of death was locked Jaw from the injuries he had received.

DEATH
At Rondebosch on the night of the 10th November 1839, Captain A.E. BYAM of the Madras Artillery. This Officer, deeply regretted by his Widow and Friends, served in the Madras Army upwards of 17 years. He was on service during the Burmese, Coory and Goomsur wars. In Burmah he served as an Artillery Officer; on his return to the coast he was appointed to the Horse Artillery. Afterwards he was appointed Private Secretary to the Resident at Hydrabad, and for a short period had charge of the Residency. He then made a Captain Commandant; and for several years commanded a Russalat of Horse. In the Coory and Goomsur wars he served as a Staff and Cavalry Officer, and when he left India for the Cape of Good Hope, on account of extreme ill-health, he was Military Secretary and Auditor of Accounts in His Highness the Nizam’s Army, with the official rank of Major. During his whole career in India he has been beloved by his brother Officers, and valued and esteemed by all under whom he served; and no one bid a fairer promise of rising to distinction, when Almighty God pleased to remove him from this world.

He further begs to offer his services to the Inhabitants of the Village of Wynberg in the double capacity of Sworn Interpreter and Translator, and General Agent.
