Thos. MARSH (signed)
Martha WADMORE (X)
Witnesses: Geo. MACKIE and Sarah BIDGE
The banns of this marriage were read on three Sundays leading up to 14 July 1799 in St.James, Clerkenwell. No marital status is given on the marriage entry in October but the banns register lists Thomas MARSH as a widower and Martha as a spinster.
Baptisms in St.Luke's Old Street:
Martha, daughter of Thomas MARSH and Martha, baptised 3 October 1802 (born 24 November 1800)
Thomas Wadmore, son of Thomas MARSH and Martha, baptised 14 October 1804 (born 6 September)
James Pickton, son of Thomas MARSH and Martha, baptised 31 May 1807 (born 8 November 1798)
George Deakin, son of Thomas MARSH and Martha, baptised 19 March 1809 (born 13 February)
Mary, daughter of Thomas and Martha MARSH, Moffatt Street, watchmaker, baptised 8 October 1815 (born 29 April)
The Settler Handbook lists a 13 year old son named Joseph Pickton MARSH. The 1807 baptism is clearly for James, not Joseph, and at first sight this would seem to be a probable misreading of the abbreviation Jas. for Jos. on the passenger return. However, the baptism also clearly states that James Pickton was born on 8 November 1798, a year before the marriage of Thomas and Martha. He was therefore probably the son of Thomas' first marriage.
According to E.Morse Jones ‘Roll of the British Settlers in South Africa’ Thomas MARSH was born in Lancashire. Family Search has a marriage in Warrington, Lancashire for Thomas MARSH to Mary PICKTON on 7 April 1796.
