The late Mr. R.G. RIPLEY.
To the Editor, Daily Representative.
Sir.- Your telegram from Kimberley recording the heroic attempt of Mr. R.G. RIPLEY, manager of the farm Compton, one of the DE BEER’s farms, to save a native who had fallen into a tank attached to an irrigation machine and thereby losing his own life, came as a sad blow to me and to his many friends in the Tarkastad, Queenstown, Burghersdorp and Molteno Districts. Ripley was a settler under the aegis of the 1820 Memorial Settlers’ Association. He was with me over two years, doing well in adapting himself to our country’s condition, and by the time he left me, I felt certain he would do well. I write to put on record the loss his many friends have sustained and to express the sympathy we have with his widow and relations, also the loss South Africa, sustains through the passing of so noble a gentleman. – I am, etc.

Obituary
Our sympathy with Mrs. Max MULLER on the death of her daughter Johanna at a nursing home in Johannesburg. The deceased young lady, who was employed in Johannesburg, was the sole support of an invalid mother in poor circumstances, and what adds poignancy to the mother’s grief, is that when urgent telegrams came summoning her to her daughter’s bedside, no material assistance from the charitably disposed, where real help was required, could be procured to bring the mother there to console her daughter.
