Obituary
Mr. Arthur Hill FILMER
Queenstown got a sad shock this morning when it became known that Mr. Arthur FILMER, of Thornlands, Queenstown, had died last night. About a fortnight ago Mr. FILMER, with Mrs. FILMER and one of their sons, left for the Free State to attend the wedding of their son who is farming there. All three seemed to get a chill on the journey up, and in less than a week arrived home again suffering from influenza. The usual precautions were taken and nothing much was thought of the position. On his return to the farm, Mr. FILMER was about for a day, but as his condition go worse the doctor was sent for. Pneumonia followed, and despite all careful nursing and medical attention Mr. FILMER gradually sank, and passed away at 10.30 last night.
Mr. Arthur Hill FILMER was one of the best known and most popular farmers in the district, and was keenly interested in the welfare of the Agricultural Society, the Farmer’s Association and other bodies. A big, handsome, strong looking man, few would have guessed his age to be 62 years. He leaves a widow and four sons, one farming in the Free State, two on the farms adjoining Thornlands, and one on Rookwood, the previous home of Mr. Arthur FILMER’s late brother, George, who died only a few months ago. In the war Mr. And Mrs. FILMER lost one son, Bernard, killed in France.
The sympathy of the whole community will go out to Mrs. FILMER and the four sons, and Miss Jessie FILMER, the only surviving sister of deceased, in their heavy bereavement. The funeral will take place this afternoon from the Wesley Church at 4 o’clock.

Mr. C.J. SMITH, of East London
East London, Sunday.
The death occurred this morning in his 66th year of Mr. C.J. SMITH, managing director of the Weekly Standard, and one of the best known and most widely loved figures in East London. “C.J.” has scores of friends and no enemies and his kindly, generous disposition endeared him to all.
A native of Coventry, England, he came to South Africa for health reasons early in the nineties and after a short stay at Grahamstown he came to East London in 1894, and became associated with the Weekly Standard, taking control of the firm. A public spirited man of progressive ideas, he served East London well, doing splendid work for the Publicity Association and carnival and taking a keen personal interest in the activities of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Mr. Smith was a keen golfer and was always ready to help and support any kind of sport. – Reuter.

HUDDY.- At Bloemfontein, on the 13th August, 1932, Samuel HUDDY, aged 57 years 6 months.
Obituary
Mr. Samuel HUDDY
Passing of Well-known figure.
The death occurred at Bloemfontein early on Saturday morning of Mr. Samuel HUDDY, who had been a well-known and much-respected citizen of Bloemfontein for the past quarter of a century. For the past 20 years Mr. HUDDY had been manager of the agricultural department of Messrs. CHAMPIONS Ltd., and among his friend and acquaintances he counted a large number of farmers, not only in Bloemfontein district, but in many parts of the Border districts and the Free State. As a token of respect, the flags on Messrs. CHAMPIONS’ buildings were on Saturday and Sunday flown at half-mast.
Born at Tudhay, Hawkchurch, Dorsetshire, 58 years ago, Mr. HUDDY came to South Africa in 1895, setting up a business at Burghersdorp. He participated in the South African War as a member of the British Intelligence Department. After the war he migrated to Tweespruit, where he was one of the earliest settlers. In 1906, however, he came to Bloemfontein, and about six years later joined the firm of Messrs CHAMPION Ltd. As head of the agricultural department. Mr. HUDDY had had considerable experience in this line of business, as he had been a travelling representative of Messrs. LLOYDS, of East London, from some time previously.
Locally the deceased was well-known as a member of the Sons of England Society, having been President of the Queen Mary Lodge in 1930, while he received the Royal Blue Degree some years ago, in addition to the Service Medal. At one time he also took a keen interest in Freemasonry. He was a prominent churchman, and, until recently, when his health began to fail, he was a member of the board of management of the Presbyterian Church.
He leaves two daughters, Mrs. J. MAYBEW and Hilda (“Billy”) HUDDY, to mourn their loss. Mrs. HUDDY, who was a daughter of the late Mr James RUSSELL, of Queenstown, predeceased her husband 13 years ago. Mr. HUDDY is also survived by three brothers, William (Molteno), Harry (Salisbury) and Fred (Pretoria), and two sisters, who live in England. Mr. Fred HUDDY was with his brother during his last hours and was a great help and comfort to all.

Obituary
Mr. Walter FILMER
A gloom was cast over the town and district during the week-end, when the news became known that Mr. Walter FILMER, of Cloetedale, had passed away on Sunday morning at the Frontier Hospital. Mr. FILMER came in to town on Tuesday last to attend the Sheep Show. He was not feeling particularly well and called to see his doctor, who advised him to go home and rest. Mr. FILMER, however, proceeded to the showyard, and while there he had a seizure. He was taken to the hospital at once, and was operated on that night for appendicitis. He made what was considered a good recovery and to the end of the week was comfortable and bright. He had a relapse on Saturday, and as stated passed away about eleven o’clock on Sunday morning.
Mr. FILMER was 74 years of age, and was one of the best known and most highly respected farmers in the Queenstown area. He was a true type of Border farmer, and was popular with everybody. He leaves one son, Mr. Gerald FILMER, and four daughter, Mrs. A.F. SCOTT, Mrs. NORTCROFT, Mrs. Harry TARR and Miss Hazel FILMER, to whom the sympathy of all will go in their heavy and somewhat unexpected bereavement.
The funeral took place at Cloetedale this morning, and was largely attended.

Mountain Tragedy.
While climbing Blinkwater Needle on Table Mountain with three others last week Harry HIRSCHSOHN, a young single man, lost his hold and fell 150 feet. He did not recover consciousness, and died within a few minutes. According to one of his companions, the accident occurred when HIRSCHSOHN was negotiating a jutting portion of rock. He secured a handhold, and wriggled his body across in order to find a safe hold for his feet. Then, while the full weight of his body was supported by his hands, the rock which he was gripping broke away. He lurched sideways and fell, brushing against the next climber. This man immediately put out his hands and caught at HIRSCHSOHN’s clothing. His grip held, but, as he was about to pull HIRSCHSOHN towards him, a rock estimated to be two feet across, hurtled down and hit HIRSCHSOHN on the head. The blow injured him severely, and, torn away from his helper’s hands by the force, HIRSCHSOHN fell headlong. He was still alive when the party had climbed down to the foot of the rocks, but died within a few minutes of his fall. The body was brought down by a stretcher party, the journey taking 2 ½ hours.

Death of Rev. W.A. GOODWIN, M.A.
News has come to hand to-day announcing the death of the Rev. W.A. GOODWIN, M.A., Rector of Holy Trinity Church, Port Elizabeth. After a long illness, Mr. GOODWIN passed away at Port Elizabeth late last night. During the years spent in Queenstown as Rector as St. Michael’s Church, the Rev. W.A. GOODWIN was popular, not only with the members of his own congregation but with all sections of the community. He was in Queenstown during the trying period of the Great War, and took part in many public functions connected therewith. In addition both he and Mrs. GOODWIN were associated with the many public committees doing war work. They were called upon to bear a heavy loss during that period when their eldest son was killed in France, and their grief was all the greater when a few days later a report was received that their second son had also been killed. This report fortunately proved to be unfounded. The reverend gentleman never lost his enthusiasm in his work for the welfare of the gallant men who were bearing the brunt of the fighting, and continued up to the end.
Among his many activities while in Queenstown, Mr. GOODWIN did excellent work for the education authorities, and as Chairman of the School Board he rendered valuable services to the community.
Perhaps Mr. GOODWIN’s greatest work while in Queenstown was his wonderful effort in connection with the magnificent Reredos and Tower of St. Michael’s. He gave several years to the raising of the necessary funds, and supervised the work throughout. We join the large circle of friends in extending to Mrs. GOODWIN and the two surviving sons, our deepest sympathy in the deepest sympathy in the heavy loss they are now called upon to bear.

LEVEY.- Passed away at the residence, Westbourne, Queenstown, on 2nd September, Blanche Gertrude Herbertina (nee WOOLARD), beloved wife of Alfred Gordon LEVEY. Age 35 years.
Obituary
Mrs. B.G.H. LEVEY
It is with deepest regret that we have to record the death which took place this morning at the residence, Westbourn, of Mrs. Blanche Gertrude Herbertina LEVEY, wife of Mr. Alfred Gordon LEVEY, one of the best known of Queenstown business men, and a highly popular sportsman.
Mrs. LEVEY was the daughter of Arthur and Elena Elizabeth WOOLARD, an old and esteemed Grahamstown family. She was endeared, as can be said of few, to a circle of friends to whom the intelligence of her death will come as a profound shock. It was following an attack of flu that complications set in an for over four weeks, Mrs. LEVEY fought with a courage and fortitude that won the unstinted admiration of her friends. Up to the last moment, her determination was as steadfast as her forbearance. In her passing many friends have lost one in whom kindness and sympathetic thought for others were deep rooted characteristics.
Mrs. LEVEY was 35 years of age. Her mother, Mrs. WOOLARD, came up from Port Elizabeth some two weeks ago, and with Mrs. LEVEY was in attendance day and night.
The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon, the cortege leaving the residence at Westbourne at 4 o’clock for the Presbyterian cemetery.
A supposed suicide
Discovery of ganger’s body.
News has reached Queenstown this morning of the death near Putters Kraal of a ganger named LIEBENBERG, in circumstances that tend to indicate suicide.
LIEBENBERG was married and had only the day before been in Sterkstroom to draw his pay.
He left his cottage at 8.30 last night and his body was discovered at 8 o’clock this morning, in the veld, about half a mile from his home.
The presence of a certain amount of dip on the scene suggests the theory of suicide.

Death during operation
What happened at an inquest.
The death of a child during an operation was investigated at a Durban inquest a few days ago.
Victoria WHEATLEY, the mother, said that on Sunday, August 14, her child had a cold, and was put to bed. Dr. BYALA, who was called in on the Tuesday, said the child was suffering from bronchitis and asthma, and gave an injection and prescribed for her. On Saturday, August 20, the girl became much worse, and witness took her to hospital. The doctor who examined her said he would have to perform an operation, and witness signed a consent form.
Dr. A. AMOILS, house surgeon at Addington Hospital, who was cautioned against making any statement or replying to any question which might incriminate him, said Florence WHEATLEY was admitted suffering from laryngeal diphtheria. She was given a whiff of anaesthetic, and tracheotomy was performed at once. She died about five minutes later, despite artificial respiration and cardiac and respiratory stimulant.

Two dead in a trench
European Labourers Trapped
Johannesburg, Wednesday.
Trapped by the caving in of a sewerage trench in Parktown to-day two European labourers were killed outright and another had one leg amputated. Several more had narrow escapes from being buried alive. A party of about twenty European labourers was busy working at the bottom of a trench twelve feet deep, when layers of shale fell, burying three men.
A tragic feature of the accident is that one man who was killed, N.C. ODENDAAL, had a premonition that there was going to be a fatal accident at the spot. He confided in his friend as recently as last Thursday that he was worried because he knew something was going to happen to him. – Reuter.
