LOWER ALBANY
Wednesday – From information received from Lower Albany, it appears the Rural Police in that locality are doing good and active service. On the 21st inst., Lieut. SURMON, stationed at Pigot Park, reported that he and part of his force had joined a patrol of the 12th Regt. And C.M.R. under Major HORNE, and led by Mr. KOESIER, as guide, had fallen in with some of the enemy at a drift of the Kap River, near Mr. PANKHURST’s farm. The Police force and C.M.Rifles, leaving their horses in charge of the men of the 12th, proceeded on the spoor through the dense bush, but on getting near the marauders the latter immediately fled, taking different directions, without affording the pursuers the chance of a fair shot. From the spoor it appeared there must have been at least fifty, all that were seen being armed with guns. It is also stated by a Hottentot woman living at Pigot Park, that she saw, on the afternoon of the 221st, a strong party of the enemy, both horse and foot, moving along at a point so near that she could distinguish among them a man in the uniform of a Cape Corps. Soldier, with a sword at his side.
Friday - We have account to-day of a very gallant affair by the Police referred to above, assisted by a few Albany farmers. Some cattle having been carried off from the vicinity of Bathurst, a report of the same was made by Mr HODGKINSON to the Police station under the command of Lieut. W. MANDY. It so happened that at that moment Lt. MANDY was absent from the station with a party of thirteen men, waylaying the passes on the Kap River. This being the case, only three men could be spared, who, under Sergeant REMON, and accompanied by two Burghers, at once started off in pursuit, taking up the spoor on Currie’s Flat, and following it into the Kowie bush, near Blue Krans. Here they were joined by a party of six Burghers from Bathurst. Six of the men, namely Sergt. REMON, three HODGKINSONs, HEYWOOD, and another, then dismounted and entered the bush, leaving the horses in charge of the other six men. It seems that after following the spoor for several hours through the dense bush, they came upon the cattle in a small krantz (rocky eminences), in the hands of at least fifty of the enemy. Notwithstanding the disparity in numbers, the marauders were at once attacked, and with such effect that the small party succeeded most gallantly in dispersing the enemy and taking possession of the cattle. One Kaffir was shot dead, and several wounded. The whole of the cattle, with the exception of one ox which had been slaughtered and its remains seen in the bush, were brought safely out into the open country, together with a horse captured from the enemy. The cattle were given over to the Bathurst Burghers. It appears, however, that while these brave men were thus employed in the bush, the enemy in their retreat came accidentally on the spot where the six men were in charge of the horses, all of which fell into their hands. The men state that they were taken by surprise, and had the greatest difficulty in effecting their escape, a matter which seems to demand some investigation. Only two of these horses belonged to the Police.
Lt. MANDY reports having shot a Kaffir, wounded two more, and captured three head of cattle, while out during the night, lying in ambush in the passes of the Kap River, above-mentioned.
We have a report that a Rebel Hottentot was shot on the farm of C. MEYER, Company’s Drift, Somerset, on Monday night. He was in the act of catching a sheep, when he was fired on with the result stated.
We learn that Lt. J. MILLER, of the Police Force, has with his customary zeal patrolled the country along the banks of the Kowie facing Lombard’s Post, and reports that locality clear of the enemy, with the exception of one Kaffir and one Hottentot, who have been seen in that neighbourhood.
