GRAAFF-REINET
We have been blessed with a gentle warm rain during the past week. In the Camdeboo, however, we noticed the mountains were thickly covered with snow, so that we may anticipate a continuance of the delightfully cold bracing weather which has set in after the rain. Pasturage will be abundant for the winter and we may confidently look forward to a continuance of fat beef and mutton. During a thunderstorm on Wednesday evening last, 75 sheep were struck dead by lightning in the kraal of Mr. Stephanus MEINTJES.

DEATH
Another of the oldest inhabitants of Port Elizabeth has been removed in the decease of Mr. Charles COOPER Sen. He had been long suffering from the malady under which he at last sunk. He leaves a large family to deplore his loss. At the same time as this instance of expected death comes with its warning to our community, an instance of sudden death in the decease of Mr. J. DIESSEL, a young man of promise, removed in the prime of life, occurs to admonish all of life’s frailty. Mr. DIESSEL was proceeding with his wagon to Somerset, and complained of nothing but headache when he left the house of a brother-in-law a few days prior to his decease. How true, then, the scripture text that “in the midst of life we are in death”.
