(Graham’s Town Journal)
July 4: W. OGILVIE sent a young man in his employ on horseback to King William’s Town on Thursday last, and on his return two Kaffirs met him on the road and asked for tobacco. He took a stick of it out of his pocket, and gave one of them half of it. He was then about to proceed when one of the fellows struck him on the head with his knob-kierie, and quickly brought him to the ground. They then hammered his head and body until they were like a jelly. I saw him the next morning, not dead, but it would make your flesh creep to look at him. His ears are half cut off; his eye has the appearance of a bladder of blood; his head, neck and body are dreadfully swollen. This outrage was committed close to Neede’s camp, and in the open daylight in the afternoon. This country is by no means safe. I am forced to watch against surprise day and night. They cut the oxen out of the yokes, and will plunder the wagon even when you are lying down under it.

The Rev F. McCLELAND, so long chaplain of St.Mary’s Church here, departed this life at 11pm on Sunday, after a long illness, leaving a large family and wide circle of friends to deplore his loss. We have not learned the exact nature of the malady by which deceased has been carried off, but it has been for some time apparent to his friends that some fatal disease was at work against his constitution; and although he long struggled against its manifest ravages and was scarcely ever heard, till about two months before his decease, to utter complaints, it was hurrying him towards his end and was not to be arrested. All that medical skill could do was done put proved unavailing; and from the midst of his labors the Rev Mr. McCLELAND is thus gathered to the home of his fathers, leaving those who survive to deplore their loss. With the bereaved family, in this time of their great sorrow, the public most deeply sympathise.

WRECK OF THE ‘CUBA’
The following letter was received yesterday morning, directed to A. JARVIS Esq from the chief officer of this unfortunate vessel, who it appears by some misunderstanding was left on board with two other seamen, at the time the crew and passengers were taken off by the City of Calcutta and Kirkman Finlay.
Knysna River, at Mr. DUTHIE’s, July 20 1853
Sir, I think it my duty to inform you, for the sake of all parties concerned, of the loss of the Cuba, Capt. WOOLLEY, on Tuesday night, the 12th July. The ship struck on Cape Receife, but went off in deep water again, - found the rudder unshipped and the ship making great deal of water, which kept the hands continually at the pumps. On Saturday last two vessels, the City of Calcutta and Kirkman Finlay, came to us, and agreed to take all hands on board, divided between the two ships, and land them either at the Cape or St.Helena. The passengers that went on board each ship respectively are as under:
City of Calcutta: Mr. HEAVYSIDE and daughter, Miss KENYON, Mr. MERRITT and Capt. WOOLLEY.
Kirkman Finlay: Mr. and Mrs. RABONE, Mrs. GIBSON and 2 children, and by some misunderstanding between the two ships, myself, carpenter, and one of the seamen were left on board to perish, but, by God’s help, we got the long boat out the same night, and after 4 days toil succeeded in reaching the land in safety yesterday morning, and arrived here this morning. I intend to proceed to Algoa Bay as soon as possible, and there I can give much more information to those requiring it.
I am &c
Jas. MEEKE, Late Chief Officer of ‘Cuba’.
To: A. JARVIS Esq, Port Elizabeth.

MARRIAGE
In the Evangelical Lutheran Church by the Rev J.M. Kloek Van Staveren VDM, August 2:
James LISSENBURY to Aletta Petronella Johanna RORICH.
Saturday 6 August 1853
To the Editor of the S.A.C.Advertiser and Cape Town Mail
Sir, having observed that in all the notices which have appeared in the newspapers respecting the loss of the bark ‘Cuba’, the names of the passengers and other particulars are incorrectly given, a circumstance which may occasion much anxiety to distant relatives and friends, I beg leave to state that the names of those who were taken on board the ‘Kirkman Finlay’ Capt. MUIRE (not the ‘Kirkman’, Capt. FINLAY) were Mr. and Mrs. RABONE, and Mrs. GIBSON of Uitenhage with two children; and that Miss KENYON, my daughter, myself, and a German youth of the name MUNDI ( not SMIDT or MERRITT), together with Capt. WOOLLEY, were taken off by the ‘City of Calcutta’, Capt. CONNELL (not Capt. MAY). The crew was divided between the two ships, with the exception of Mr. MEEKE, the first officer, the carpenter, and one seaman, whom Mr. MEEKE represents as left on board the sinking vessel by some misunderstanding between the two other ships but who were distinctly understood by all positively to refuse to leave her. Whether this was a mistake or not, it is most gratifying to learn that they, too, are safe, so that by God’s mercy there has been no loss of any man’s life.
Permit me also to embrace the opportunity thus afforded of expressing for myself and fellow sufferers the high sense we shall ever entertain of the liberality and kindness we experienced, not only from Capt. CONNELL, who stood in along the coast with the view of discovering some opportunity for landing us, but still more from Capt. CLAYDON (not CLAYTON) of the schooner ‘Onward’, by whom we were taken from the ‘City of Calcutta’, and landed in Table Bay, and to whose extreme kindness and attention our warmest thanks are justly due.
I am Sir &c
John HEAVYSIDE, Chaplain of Graham’s Town.

Departed this Life suddenly on the 14th instant, Mr. James McGREGOR of Salt River House, aged 55 years and 7 months, leaving an affectionate wife and young family to deplore and mourn his premature death and irreparable loss; also a numerous circle of friends, who fully appreciated the strict principles of integrity and undeviating rectitude, which have ever formed the prominent features of his unblemished life.
NB The Friends of the late Mr. McGREGOR are hereby invited to meet the Funeral Procession at the Castle-bridge at ¼ past 3 o’clock this afternoon.
Cape Town, 16th August 1853.
On the forenoon of Sunday last Mr. James McGREGOR, well known and justly respected in this town, died suddenly, as is probable, from some affection of the heart, or large vessels near it. He had attended divine service in the Scotch Church as usual, and was walking homeward at 12 o’clock, when he felt severe pain in the left side and back, which increased rapidly, and in a few minutes he expired.
A sketch of Mr. McGREGOR’s life, by some person well acquainted with him, would be gratifying to the public and very useful at this moment. In early life he became a member of the School of Arts in Edinburgh, then just established, after the first Mechanics’ Institution in Glasgow. He there learned much, and profited by what he learned. In this Colony he has acted for many years in a quiet unobtrusive manner, as builder, architect and engineer. He was the first who introduced Gas Lights, and he constructed the first Rail Road at the Cape. He superintended the construction of the Stone Jetty near the Amsterdam Battery, afterwards abandoned by Government, and began and completed the Central Causeway in Table Bay. He found employment for a number of aged and otherwise helpless people in the collection of bones, old iron and other apparently useless articles, strewed along the beach – a homely but most benevolent exertion of good sense and kind feeling. He was ever ready in promoting improvements, with advice, personal labor or money. He was a judicious and considerate master, and never experienced any difficulty in procuring laborers. He was one of those who give to God and man their due. Blameless, upright, active – of that class whom Mechanics’ Institutions are rearing for the benefit of the world.
CAPE TOWN MECHANICS’ INSTITUTE
Cape Town, August 12th, 1853.
51, Plein-street.
To the Editor of the S.A.C. Advertiser and Cape Town Mail.
Sir, - Last evening a meeting of the Cape Town Mechanics’ Institution was held at the Town House, when the Provisional Committee made their report, inclusive of the Fundamental Rules of the Future guidance of the Society. Next Thursday evening another meeting will be held for the purpose of carrying into effect part of those rules; that is, the election of twelve Committee-men, Treasurer, and Secretary. Having had considerable experience in connection with Literary, Scientific, and Mechanic Institutions in England, probably a few remarks may be useful in guiding those to whom such an Institution may be new, in the election by ballot of the men most calculated to manage and fully carry out the objects contemplated. It should be borne in mind, that a Mechanics’ Institution is a People’s Institution, and therefore the Committee of Management, should consist of such men as may, as far as possible, feel themselves on a personal equality, Education, Judgement, Energy, capability of devoting some little time to the zealous performance of their duties, and the better if in possession of some little experience in the management of Societies of a kindred character.
The Treasurer’s duties, truly, are of a very simple character; yet of vast importance to the well-being of the Institution; he should therefore be a man of well known standing and respectability in society, as upon him will devolve the duty of taking charge of Funds, agreeably to the fundamental laws of the Institution.
The Secretary and his duties, the experience of Scientific Institutions prove will be of a widely different character, neither light or small. He should be in attendance every evening at the Institution, and on him will devolve, in a great measure, the carrying efficiently out the directions of the Managing Committee, as well as other duties of a harassing nature; probably to a partial observer these duties may appear simple, and the requirements to fill such an office ordinary, - but such duties have only to be experienced to ascertain that the contrary will be the fact. It has therefore always been found best, to pay such an important officer, say a small salary at commencement, to increase as the Institution prospers, the Secretary would then become the servant of the Society, and not entitled to any vote; on the contrary, should he be honorary, he will have a voice in all proceedings, and probably dispute the propriety of carrying into effect some of the resolutions passed by the Managing Committee, and he may also be open to the objection of being partial to some of the members, and not in any way courteous to others. On the zealous and effective performance of his duties, in a great measure, will depend the future progress and success of the Institution.
Trusting that this Society may increase in prosperity without ebbing, is the sincere wish of, Sir,
Your obedient Servant
GEO. PAYNE,
A Member of the Provisional Committee
CAPE TOWN MECHANICS’ INSTITUTE.

Death of Commandant Gen. A.W.J. PRETORIUS
In course of the bye gone week a report prevailed here that Mr. A.W.J. PRETORIUS, Commandant Gen. of the Trans Vaal Republic, had departed this life. Doubts were entertained of this report, until Friday evening, when a letter from that quarter confirmed the report. We have much pleasure in recording that the old general, on being assured that his mortal existence was about to close, addressed letters to his various subordinates, exhorting them strongly to cultivate the friendship of the British Nation. Thus has closed the career of a public character, who played a remarkably prominent part on the limited stage on which he acted; whom circumstances created – who in turn created circumstances, which circumstances helped to mould and direct his peculiar aptitudes. The post of next week will no doubt bring us the particulars.

QUEEN’S TOWN DISTRICT:
By a letter received from a correspondent in Baviaan’s River, we learn that that district has almost entirely cleared out for Buccleugh District in Queen’s Town. The following families move at once: Mr. SCOTT of Clifton and family; Mr. R. PRINGLE of Eildon and family; Messrs. Thomas, William, John, James and Alexander PRINGLE, all young adventurers from Glen Lynden; Mr. COTTINGHAM and family; Messrs. SYDSERF; Mr. HALLYBURTON and family; Messrs W. and J. WEBSTER; and a large Dutch family, the MARAIS. These form a strong compact body, and in the open country of Queen’s Town will no doubt take care to hold their own. From Glen Lynden we regret to learn of the continued drought in that quarter, by which all farming operations are very much kept back.
