Heroic Rescue at Port Alfred
Mr. Berry BAKER of Grahamstown was for the tenth time a prominent figure in an exciting rescue from drowning on the east beach at Port Alfred at about noon on Saturday when the tide was on the turn.
It appears that an elderly gentleman, Mr. FLEMMING got into difficulties while bathing and that Miss Kathleen ALLEN, aged 15, in attempting to assist him had also got into difficulties.
There were about sixty onlookers on the beach.  Some of these seized a lifebuoy but then appeared to loose their heads.
At the critical moment, Mr. Berry BAKER appeared on the scene immediately rushed to the rescue with the lifebuoy which he placed over the head of Mr. FLEMMING who was by this time exhausted.
Mr. BAKER was assisted by Mr. KRISCH, while Mr. WILMOT of Grahamstown rendered help to the girl.
Mr. FLEMMING was soon revived and neither he nor the girl are any the worse for the accident.

Queenstown Lads’ Heroic Rescue Work
Gonubie Bathing Tragedy.
On Wednesday, December 28, a drowning tragedy took place at Gonubie, when a young Pretoria man, John KELSKENS, lost his life.
KELSKENS and a companion plunged into the sea to rescue a boy whom they thought to be in difficulties and were carried out to a sandbank by the strong current.  Two scouts and two boys from Grey College, Bloemfontein, reached the spot and the boy was rescued, but all others were now in difficulties.
It was at this stage that Jack PARSONSON and Billy HARVEY, two Queen’s College boys dashed out, prepared the life-line and took the buoy in themselves.  They managed to rescue a man called WALKER and two scouts.
By this time KELSKENS had a companion, for a Mr. NELSON had jumped from the rocks near the beach an after a magnificent swim, practically got across the bay, reassured KELSKENS.  Shortly afterwards KELSKENS became unconscious and NELSON held him for fully twenty minutes while PARSONSON and HARVEY mad frantic efforts to reach them.
PARSONSON took the line out alone on its fourth journey, as HARVEY was by this time exhausted.  It was then noticed that KELSKENS’ body had slipped from NELSON’s grasp.  NELSON flung himself on his back and by floating reached the inner channel, which washed him to the shore unconscious.  He was soon brought round however, after artificial respiration had been applied.  KELSKENS body was found later, up the river.
The original report of this accident in the Daily Dispatch makes no mention of either PARSONSON of HARVEY, but the above is the story an eye witness.

Fatal Accident
A young gunner, B MINNAAR (22), of the 1st Battery South African Field Artillery, received fatal injuries at Roberts Heights on Tuesday morning when he was thrown from his horse after the team had bolted.  It appears that the team of six horses was harnessed to a sledge carrying concrete when the swingle-tree broke and frightened the horses.  They bolted, and MINNAAR received severe injuries to the head.  He was operated on at the hospital but died about three hours later.  He was single and came from Potschefstroom.  His father was visiting him and was with him when he died.  MINNAAR has a younger brother in the battery who was also with the team.

A Farmer Killed.
Mr. Edward Robertson VELS, a well-known farmer in the Bethlehem district, was this week killed by lightning about four miles from Bethlehem while riding on horseback.  Mr. VELS was riding alone, and it was not until late in the afternoon that Mr. H.H. MASSYN, passing that way, found the deceased and his horse lying in the road.
Whether Mr. VELS was bound for his farm or for town is not yet known, but the position of his horse indicated that was on his way to Bethlehem.  It is possible, therefore, that his wife and family on the farm, some 18 miles away, thought him safely in town and owing to the bad weather conditions, were not apprised of his fate until the next morning.

Obituary
The late Mr. Robert EWAN.
(From our own Correspondent.)
Sterkstroom.
Death has been very busy among the old residents of Sterkstroom.  The past twelve months have witnessed the departure of many old and familiar faces, and it was only the other day that Sterkstroom lost one of its most distinguished men by the death of Mr. Robert EWAN.
Born in Braemar in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, he came to Sterkstroom about 46 years ago, at which place he lived ever since.  The late Mr. EWAN was one of the best known and most respected citizens of Sterkstroom.  He labored unceasingly as few know, for the progress of the town in which he settled, and his timely counsel was always sought when some new development in the town’s progress promised further realization of his hopes.
The confidence engendered by the community in the deceased was shown when on three occasions he was unanimously elected to the mayoralty, and in the main he was responsible for the various improvements that had been effected during his tenure as a councilor and mayor, which stand as a monument to his practical wisdom, such as the beautifying of our Market Square, the water and sanitation schemes, electric light, the laying out and planting with trees of EWAN Park, and the many needed improvements effected for the betterment of the location residents.
Outside his official duties he was an interested supporter of the local Boy Scouts’ Association, of which he was president since the departure of the late Dr. ROBERTSON, its first president.
As chairman of the Library and of the Building Society, he took a keen interest in those Institutions.
Mr. EWAN’s untimely death at the age of 65 years will be felt as a personal loss by all classes of the community, European, coloured, native and Indian alike.  His genial quiet humour, his kindliness to the poor, the absolute sincerity of his life, awakened a real personal regard for him in every one who came to know him.
The funeral took place on Tuesday morning last, where in the Anglican Church of St. Augustine, of which the deceased was a churchwarden, an impressive memorial service was held by the Rev. G.T. EASTEN, assisted by the Rev. LEYGONIE, of the Dutch Reformed Church…
Our strongest sympathy goes out to his widowed wife, Mrs. EWAN, and his surviving sons, Messrs. D. EWAN, secretary, Hospital Board, East London, A. EWAN, secretary, local School Board, M. EWAN, of the Standard Bank, Pretoria,, and Nurse Z. EWAN, of the General Hospital, Johannesburg, who came down to nurse her father.

Death
MARSHALL.-  Passed away suddenly at the General Hospital, Johannesburg, on Friday, the 22nd April, Durban A.B. MARSHALL, dearly loved husband of Kate MARSHALL, in his 77th year.

Obituary
The Late Mr. Durban MARSHALL
Early on Friday morning, April 22, there passed away at the General Hospital, Johannesburg, Mr. Durban MARSHALL, aged 76 years.  For some considerable time he had been in indifferent health and at last decided to be attendend to by a specialist.  After successfully passing through a minor operation, it was decided that a major operation was necessary, and this was performed.  Mr. MARSHALL appeared to stand the strain very well, but apparently it was too much for his weakened system and on the following day he died in his sleep.
The late Mr. MARSHALL was born in Grahamstown in 1856 and lived there during his early life.  In 1888, however, his brother William, who with Mr. T.H. MARSHALL, founded the firm of MARSHALL Bros., decided to go farming and his place in the firm was taken by the late Mr. Durban MARSHALL.  For the next 19 years a very successful business was carried on in Dugmore Street, until the brothers decided to retire and dispose of their interests to Messrs.  MATTHEWS Bros.  Since that time he has lived in Queenstown, a town in which he took a great pride and for which he had a real affection.  For over 25 years Mr. Durban MARSHALL had been a very valued member of the Wesley Church Trust Committee and with his brother had watched very closely the preservation of the fabric of the church.  As a member of the Quarter Board his advice was readily given to this co-stewards and to the ministers of the Circuit on any points on which they required assistance.  Always quiet and unassuming he had never taken any prominent place in public affairs and in later years his gradually increasing deafness had rendered him more loth than ever to come forward, but his help was always available when requested and those who had business dealings with him all bear testimony to his scrupulous honesty and fairness.  As a regular attendant at Wesley Church he will be sorely missed by ministers and officials alike, and the War Memorial tablet which stands in the apse of the church will always be a testimony to the trouble he took over matters where the interests of the church were concerned, as it was largely owing to the time he put into the matter while on a holiday in England that such a beautiful tablet was obtained.  The many wreaths and floral tributes testify to the great esteem in which he was held.

WATERFIELD, chief assistant at the southern station of Harvard University Observatory, Mazelspoort, Bloemfontein, died from injuries sustained between the motor cycle he was riding and a milk cart (says the Friend).  The motor cyclist was flung from his machine and fell beside it in the centre of the road.  Part of the right side of his head was badly crushed and his right eye was seriously injured, in addition the lower part of his left leg was fractured and he was thought to have suffered internal injuries.  He was taken to hospital in an unconscious condition and died without regaining consciousness.

Obituary
The news was received with some surprise this morning announcing the death of Mr. A.R. FULLER, of the firm of Messrs. A.R. FULLER & Son.  Mr. FULLER had been ailing for some little time, but no serious view was taken of his condition, though it was known that his heart was affected.  He passed peacefully away this morning.  Mr. FULLER has been in the plumbing business in Queenstown for over forty years, and has ever had the confidence and respect of his fellow citiens.  He was a keen musician, and for years was associated with the Queenstown Band.  He took an interest in town affairs, but never sought office of any sort.  Of a quiet, retiring disposition, Mr. FULLER was beloved by a very large circle of friends,…

Death
CREBO.-  Passed peacefully away at the Frontier Hospital, on the 21st inst., Robert CREBO.  Aged 84 years.

Death of Mr. R. CREBO
By the death of Mr. R. CREBO late yesterday afternoon, Queenstown has lost a real landmark.  Mr. CREBO, who was 83 years of age, had been in poor health for a long time but took a serious turn about a fortnight ago.  Endeavours were made to persuade him to go to Hospital, but he refused to move from his own home till yesterday morning, when it was too late to do much for the old man.  He passed away about 5 p.m.
Up to the time of the introduction of the motor car, “Bob” CREBO (as he was familiarly known) carried on a successful livery business in Queenstown and his smart horses and carriages have been used by many distinguished personages, including Governors-General, Judges, Mr. Cecil RHODES and other famous politicians.  The “great” people Mr. CREBO used to drive himself, but for no one would he don a jacket of coat.  He was a well-known “character,” and many fine stories are woven round his name.  He was extremely popular, and beloved by all.  He has lived in Queenstown for over half a century, and was seen in the streets in his little buggy practically every day.  He attended the morning market regularly, and was known to everyone.  Mr. CREBO was very proud of one of his brothers, who became mayor of Kansas City, in U.S.A.
The introduction of motor transport brought Mr. CREBO’s business to a very small affair indeed, and he deplored the disappearance of the horse.  Bad health has kept him quiet for a number of years, but in the earlier days he was the best known man in and around Queenstown, and everybody enjoyed a quarter of an hour with “Bob” to hear his stories and reminiscences.  He was kindly and generous and took a keen interest in the development of the town.  The older generation will miss “Old Bob CREBO,”  and the sympathy of the whole community will go out to his family in their bereavement.

One of the most largely-attended marriage ceremonies ever held in Queenstown took place last night when two weddings were held in Queen’s Drive Synagogue and a joint reception in the Town Hall afterwards drew a gathering of over three hundred.
The brides were the two daughters of Mr. J. LEVIN, Deputy-Mayor, and Mrs. LEVIN.  The first ceremony was the marriage of Miss Rae LEVIN, eldest daughter, to Mr. Henry BUTLION, second son of Mr. and Mrs. L. BUTLION, of Port Elizabeth, and was solemnized by the Rev. FRIEDMAN, at 6.45 p.m.
Immediately afterwards the Rev. FRIEDMAN conducted the marriage of the second daughter, Miss Rose LEVIN, and Mr. Arthur KAPLAN, only son of Mrs. KAPLAN and the late Mr. KAPLAN, of Oudtshoorn.
Mr. J. LEVIN gave the bride away in each instance.
The Synagogue was packed to the doors when the ceremony started.  Miss Rae LEVIN’s bridesmaids were Miss VALENCHYK and Miss Violet BUTLION, and the bestman’s duties were ably handled by Mr. Mick BUTLION, brother of the bridegroom.

Obituary
Death of Ex-Senator “Harry” VAN HEERDEN
The death was announced to-day of Mr. Hercules (Harry) VAN HEERDEN, father of Mr. G.C. VAN HEERDEN, M.P., at Tarkastad early this morning.  Mr. Harry VAN HEERDEN was one of the prominent men in South Africa in his active days and even after he retired to his Tarkastad home he was liked and respected for those qualities which had stood him in such good stead in the earlier days.  Mr. VAN HEERDEN achieved high positions in the service of the state and was an honoured figure in many of the most responsible offices that the country can offer to his servants.  He began his political career as M.L. A. for Cradock and ended by achieving the distinguished title of Senator the Honourable Hercules VAN HEERDEN, President of the Senate of the Union of South Africa.  He was during his parliamentary career, appointed Minister of Agriculture, an office that brought him the highest renown.  He was exceedingly popular both in the House of Assembly and in the Senate as a result of his amiable ways and moderate views.  He was a pillar of the South African Party, an example of high standing being the fact that he was selected by Mr. MERRIMAN as one of the delegates to the National Convention.  He was one of the few living survivors of that historic body of men.  Mr. VAN HEERDEN was 71 years old.  His home was Schaapkraal, Tarkastad, a well-known Border farm.  The funeral took place at Tarkastad to-day.

Unusual Circumstances of a Death
The death occurred under unusual circumstances recently of Mrs. F.H. HEPWORTH, of Harrismith, at the age of 77.  Mrs. HEPWORTH and her husband were sitting carrying on a conversation when her head was seen suddenly to fall to one side.  Thinking that his wife was asleep Mr. HEPWORTH placed a pillow behind her head and later put her to bed.  On Monday morning he again dressed his wife and put her back into her chair.  Noting however that she still appeared to be asleep he sent for a doctor, who declared that Mrs. HEPWORTH had been dead for about 24 hours.

A Motoring Fatality
Several accidents occurred on the East London road on Monday night (states the Cape Mercury).  Mr. Fred BURGER had his car seriously damaged in a collision near Bell Rock when returning from East London.  A company of local natives on the way from Stutterheim came to grief the other side of Amabele.  Full details are not available, but we gather that the car in which, there were five passengers, struck a sneezewood pole which had former part of a gate removed some time ago.  The impact was so severe that the driver, Paul MAKAMBI, was killed on the spot, and all the other occupants of the car were injured, through apparently not very seriously.

Fell Dead on the Veld.
A European woman, Mrs. Ignatius ENGELBRECHT, residing on a farm in the Zuurberg, Somerset East district, was found dead in the veld recently (states the Cradock paper).  A post mortem examination by the District Surgeon reveals that the death was due to heart failure.  The deceased, who is 67 years of age, was missed by her husband and son the previous evening and as it was surmised that she had walked to the house of another son who resided about 500 yards away, a search was made, but it was only after daylight that the body was found.  Investigations showed that deceased fell in the footpath on which she was walking, but as there is a steep incline the body rolled some distance away and that was why it was not found in the dark.

Unemployed teacher commits suicide
Bloemfontein Sunday.
W.F. BEZUIDENHOUT, senior clerk in charge of staff appointments in the Education Department and Chairman of the Public Service Association, was shot dead in the dining room of his home to-nigh by an unemployed school teacher, Dirk Jan KOOY, who subsequently committed suicide.
BEZUIDENHOUT was sitting between his wife and sister, with his children playing happily in the adjoining porch, when two rifle shots rang out from the darkness of the night, shattering his head and face and killing him instantly.
When the police arrived a few minutes later they found the hatless and bootless body of KOOY lying, with his skull and part of his face blown away, below the window of the dining room in a lane outside the house.
By his side was a Lee-Metford rifle with three spent cartridges and a live bullet in the magazine.
Though terribly injured KOOY was still alive when found by the police, but he died an hour later in hospital.

Johannesburg Youth Killed
A youth named Walter INNS of Johannesburg was killed instantly recently when he was run over by a motor lorry in High Street, Brixton.  INNS was riding a bicycle and hanging with one hand to the side of a motor lorry climbing a hill.  At the corner of High Street and Ripley Road he lost control of his bicycle, which slipped underneath him.  He fell to the ground.  Following on behind him, a motor lorry, driven by a European and loaded with bricks, could not be stopped in time to avert an accident, and the front wheels passed over INN’s head.

Riding Fatality
News of a shocking accident at Dullstroom reached the town the other day (says the Potchefstroom Hearald).  It appears that Mr. Ahlers was out riding with his seven-year-old son, when the horse unseated the lad, whose foot got caught in the stirrup.  The horse then bolted, dragging the unfortunate lad, and when released he was found to be dead.

Death
HADDAD.-  Died at 114, Cathcart Road, on the 24th inst., Alexander Nicholas, beloved husband of Isabel HADDAD, in his 56th year.

Death of Dr. A. WEAKLEY
Queenstown lost another old and esteemed resident yesterday with the passing of Dr. A. WEAKLEY, who died at his residence in Zeiler Street about 12.30 p.m. as a result of a heart attack.  Deceased, who was about 80 years of age, has been in Queenstown for nearly forty years.  He was predeceased by his wife some years ago, and has himself been in poor health for a considerable time.
For well nigh quarter of a century Dr. WEAKLEY has been medical officer for the Native Recruiting Corporation for this area, and thus many, many thousands of natives bound for the Rand Mines have passed through his hands.  He was on duty as usual at the local office the day before he died.  There are still many who remember Dr. WEAKLEY in his palmy days on the football field and tennis court.  Sturdily built, and very muscular, the Doctor first played rugger then soccer football, and was centre half-back in the Caledonian team of 1900-1905, when for two seasons the team was undefeated.  Dr. WEAKLY did much to gather the young people around him, and encouraged all to go in for healthy sport.
While he was Railway Medical Officer, prior to becoming associated with the Native Recruiting Corporation, he had an extensive private practice in Queenstown, and was particularly noted for his skill with children.  During recent years he has lived a very retired life, and devoted much time to reading.  To his family the sympathy of all will go out in their bereavement.

An Unusual Accident
An unusual accident at Kenhardt on Saturday resulted in the death of a coloured woman, named Dirkie TITIS.  It appears that the lorry, in which she and others were travelling to Rooiberg, stuck in the road and all on board were asked to assist in pushing it out of the sand.  While she was thus engaged she slipped and fell into the deep sandy spoor in front of the lorry which went over her, causing fatal injuries.

European Killed by Train.
A middle-aged European, who is believed to be Joseph LOMBAARD, an inmate of the Alexandra Institution, Maitland, states the Cape Times, was knocked down and killed by an electric train at a crossing near the United Tobacco Factory, between the Observatory and Salt River stations.  The body was terribly mutilated and was taken to the Woodstock mortuary.  It is stated that the driver of the train observed the man standing on the rails 20 to 30 yards ahead, and although he pulled up the train immediately, was unable to avoid knocking him down.  As a result of the fatality, the Capetown-Johannesburg mail train and two suburban trains on the Simonstwon-Capetown line were delayed.  The mail train was the 8.45 for Capetown and its departure was delayed a few minutes to enable passengers from Simonstown to make the connection.  The suburban trains were the 8.25 and 8.35 into Capetown, the former being involved in the fatality.

Fatal Collision of Pillion Rider
The storm and rain on the Johannesburg road on Saturday night caused a fatality.  J.S. ROETS, a European, of Dalys Farm, Muckleneuk, Pretoria, who was riding pillion on a motorcycle, receiving fatal injuries when the cycle skidded in the path of an oncoming car, states the Cape Times.  It is understood that the driver of the cycle attempted to pass a car proceeding in the same direction.  The visibility was extremely bad and he failed to observe an oncoming car until it was dangerously close.  When the driver of the cycle attempted to swerve out of the way, the machine skidded and ROETS was thrown directly in the path of the oncoming car which passed over him.  Fortunately, the skidding cycle carried the driver out of danger.  ROETS received such severe injuries that he died half an hour after admission to hospital.

Death of a Cyclist
The story of how a young man who was riding a bicycle and holding on to the back of a lorry let go his grip and was knocked down and killed by another lorry from behind, was told to Mr. M.R. HARTOGH at the Johannesburg Inquest Court recently, when an inquest was held on Norman LE SUER, known as Walter Leslie INGS, aged 16, of stand 1219, Second Street, Albertskroon.  Ben THALA said that on the morning of October 20 he was on a motor lorry following behind.  Before they came to the top of the Brixton Hill a European and a native, both on bicycles, were holding on to the rear corners of the lorry.  They were told not to do this, but the European did not release his hold.  “When we got near Ripley Road the lorry travelling behind came nearer ours, and the driver blew his hooter and swerved slightly to his right to overtake us.  At the same time the European who was riding the bicycle and holding on to our lorry looked round, let go of our lorry, swerved to his right immediately in front of the other lorry.  The driver of the vehicle swerved further to his right to avoid an accident, but the front part of the lorry came in contact with the right side of the cyclist.  He was thrown to the ground and the lorry went over him.  He died a few minutes later.”  Mr. HARTOGH returned a verdict of accidental death due to crushed head, caused by being knocked down by a motor lorry.€

The Late Mr. W.M. JACKSON
There passed away recently in East London, Mr. W.M. JACKSON, who for many years in the late seventies and early eighties of last century was on the staff of Queen’s College.  In those days almost the only form of sport (if it may be called sport) under the supervision of the teaching staff, was the cadet corps and rifle shoting.  The late Mr. JACKSON was one of the first teacher-officers in this department and under his capable tuition a team of first class marksmen was built up, in spite of the antiquated rifles used and the resultant bruised shoulders and stiff arms.  In 1881 the team was successful in winning the Cadet Shooting Cup.  From Queenstown Mr. JACKSON went to Tarkastad as principal, and later took up the position of head of the West Bank school, East London, which position he held until his retirement  in 1914. (Daily Dispatch).

The news of Mr. J.S. BEVINGTON’s tragic death yesterday, came as a shock to everyone in Indwe.  Mr. BEVINGTON, who was a progressive farmer, sold his farm, Overton, after he had been staying in the district for a good number of years, and was waiting for the school inspection, after which he intended to leave for East London where he had decided to make his new home.
Lately he suffered from a weak stomach and his nerves were in a critical condition, which more than anything else accounts for his tragic deed.
We wish to extend our heartfelt sympathy with Mrs. BEVINGTON, Ivor and Phyllis.

Fatal Motor Accident
A fatal motor accident occurred near Middle Drift recently. From what we can gather from the local police, states the “Cape Mercury,” a car containing three Bedford people – Mr. W. VAN HEERDEN, Mr. P. VAN HEERDEN and Miss C. VAN HEERDEN – was travelling from Bedford when the steering gear broke and the car somersaulted, Mr. W. VAN HEERDEN being killed in the crash.  The other occupants of the ill-fated car were not injured.  The body of the deceased gentleman was brought to the King Williamstown mortuary, where it was seen by the District Surgeon (Dr. C.P. BLIGH WALL), and was later removed to Bedford for interment.

HENRICO.-  In ever loving memory of our dear mother, Johanna, who passed away at the Delville Nursing Home, East London, on the 16th December, 1932.

Saved from Drowning.  Then Died.
After being rescued from drowning by a schoolboy aged 16, a coloured youth, Dial STURRMAN, aged 18, walked half a mile and then dropped dead death being due to old-established pleurisy, says the Oudtshoorn paper.
Cornelius DU PLESSIS and his friend were walking along the banks of the Grobbelaar River when they heard cries for help from a pool.  They found STURRMAN in difficulties and Cornelius undressed and dived in at the spot where he saw the youth disappearing.  He failed to locate him, but at the third attempt he brought out STURRMAN, who was unconscious.  Cornelius started rolling him in the sand and STURRMAN recovered and walked away.

Drowned in a Storm
The story of the drowning of two children, Gert en Monica COERTZE, in the storm on November 22, was told at the inquest in Johannesburg recently, says “the Rand Daily Mail.”  Christina COERTZE, their 11-year-old sister, said that Gert left the kitchen of their house at Edenvale without saying where he was going.  Later her mother asked where Monica was, and began to look for her.  “I went down to the river,”  continued Christina, “and saw Gert and Monica on a big stone with rushing water all around them.  I screamed to Gert to cross as the river was coming down.  He called back to me to fetch our native as the water was too strong to carry Monica over.  I was past getting through the fence when I looked back and saw the water wash them off the rock.  I screamed for help but no one heard.  I then rand to the house to tell my mother.::  Cornelius LOVELL, a neighbor, said he went to search for the children.  Near the eastern bank on the Small Yokeskei River he found Monica’s body.  Johannes BOTHMA testified to finding Gert’s body in the river two days later.
“Accidental death by drowning” was the verdict.
