Why should we cite our sources? There are several reasons, but one of the most important is to know where information you have comes from. When we find a new piece of information and add it to our database or report, it's easy to remember where the piece of information came from, in the begining ... but as time goes by and pieces of information become whole stories, genealogies, reports and websites, with thousands of facts, it becomes almost impossible to tell where what came from, never mind verify the facts collected. It is important , therefore maybe even more important than the fact itself, to note exactly where every bit of information comes from. For example: One finds a lot of information in several different publications of 'Familia'. If the citation 'Familia' is used, one may have to re-read all the issues several years later if one did not record the details. In addition to citing the name of the publication, one should add the year, issue number, article name, page numbers, author of the articles etc.
Full and proper citations are also an absolute must if you want to publish your work on the internet, articles or in a book. The readers must be able to trace your sources to their origin and be able to verify them, which requires a citation that reads like a roadmap from start to finish.
Below are some examples of how to cite the information you find on this site. (always cite the site and the record)
The various basic elements comprising the citations below are given alternate shades in the list and in the citation to distinguish them.
Your citation should contain at least the following:
- name of the website creator, in this case: The Genealogical Society of South Africa: eGSSA branch
- name of the website in italics: South African Records Transcribed. A selection of historical records transcriptions
- URL and the date accessed in brackets: (http://www.eggsa.org/sarecords/ : accessed 2 Feb 2014)
- the title of the page or article consulted for example: "Cape Town Marriages 1666"
- any other deatails from the webpage to identify the specific record or text to which the citation refers followed by a semicolon
- the source of the original citation as given in the introduction of the article(s) or at the bottom of the article itself and any relevant information given to locate it.
Example 1 - for the marriage entry of W. Widerholt and G. Meyntinghs published in "Cape Town Marriages 1666". The source for the transcripts were: "Cape Archives Verbatim Copies VC 603 (photocopies of the original registers) Cape Town Nederduits Gereformeerde Kerk - marriage register 1665 - 1695. Original registers are located in the NG Kerkargief, Noordwal-Wes, Stellenbosch as G1 1/1"
