THE TORTOISE TICK
There appears no end to the tick tribe. Mr. C. W. Mally, Eastern Province Entomologist, says the tortoise tick is the largest of the South African species, and perhaps is without a rival anywhere. The young stages (larvae and nympha) have been found on cattle, goats, and birds, but adults only on tortoises and snakes. It belongs to a genus quite distinct from the “fever ticks.” It is comparatively a rare tick, and so far has not been found guilty of conveying disease of any kind.
The hotel at Fort Brown, in the Eastern Province of the Cape, was recently washed away, owing to heavy rains.
A young man named Brutski committed suicide by shooting himself near Wepener recently. Letters were found showing that he was upset over a love affair.
As the result of a trap accident at Aliwal recently a boy, named Willie Dawe, received such injuries that he died two hours later. The deceased was the eldest son of the President of the local Chamber of Commerce.
