BOTHA, Christiaan Laurens, Advocate (1870-1951)
Advocate CHRISTIAN LAURENS BOTHA is a son of the late Paul Michiel Botha, for many years a member of the Free State Volksraad, and was born at Kroonstad in the year 1870. He received the first part of his education at the Grey College, and subsequently at Stellenbosch. He afterwards proceeded to London and Holland, took the degree of D.L. at the University of Amsterdam, and was called to the Bar at the Middle Temple in 1893. Returning to South Africa, the young advocate commenced practice in the Transvaal.
When the war broke out he came to Bloemfontein, joined the burgher forces, and served with distinction under General Grabler at the battles of Colesberg and Stormberg.
Mr. Botha is a member of the Town Council, where his legal knowledge is often of great value, and is a member of the Bloemfontein, Ramblers', and City Clubs.
He translated all the Free State laws from Dutch into English, for which he has been highly complimented, and is Vice-President of the Law Society.
