Daniel Cornelius Boonzaaier, 1865-1950

Daniel Cornelius Boonzaaier was the son of Willem Daniel Carel Boonzaaier and Yda Meltina Anna de Waal. He was born on 11 November 1865 in Carnavon, South Africa.

He was famous for his caricatures of Cape politicians and celebrities at the turn of the 19th century, and thereafter for his anti-capitalist and anti-imperialist cartoons for Die Burger. Nowadays he is best known for fathering artist Gregoire Boonzaier.

He was more commonly known as D.C. Boonzaaier.

1882 – Daniel Cornelius moves to Cape Town at the age of 16 to work as a clerk in the Master's Office. He was offered the job because of his impressive copperplate handwriting. Here he started drawing portraits from photographs of world-celebrities.

1884 – He publishes his first caricature. He had no formal art training but was inspired by the work of George du Maurier and Phil May fo'' Punch'' fame.

1889 – Daniel resigns from his post as clerk and becomes a professional cartoonist. He does work for several newspapers.

1901 – He publishes ''Owlograms''.

1903 – Daniel Cornelius becomes the first cartoonist that is appointed to the permanent staff of a South African newspaper, the ''South Africa News''.

1915 – 1940 He is the cartoonist for ''Die Burger'',Cape Town.

20 March 1950: Daniel passes away in Cape Town, South Africa at the age of 84.
